The mahogany business was not booming, and many of the urban workers were unemployed and suffering. The Bfittlfi Advertiser published a series of furious editorials about the undeserving nature of the Caribs and Indians, arguing that they should be given no special treatment when it came to land. In this context the following aquot;patrioticaquot; acrostic poem, also from the Belize Advertiser (Vol. 2, no. 1, July 27, 1889), celebrating the history of the colony, becomes more understandable.
